Can I start by saying how beautiful this song is, it's a Saturday afternoon just landed back from time away in Barcelona and I press play on 'Roots' after receiving an email about Mega's latest release (yes we check our emails, mine more often on the weekend believe it or not!). 'Roots' to me, makes me want to travel, makes me want to explore places, people the world and at the same time the song makes me feel brave, courageous as if anything is possible. I can hear this song being sung in church, around a fire, at the ending credits of those kinds of films that have you just sitting there once the film is over silently thanking all the people on production. I'd have loved to be in the room when this song came to life.
'Roots' feels like an artist just being. There is so much unspoken power in standing in your own space, firm, rooted to the ground. Listening to this record paints the picture that MEGA's in a really good spot, completely settled in he own skin.
The beauty is in how stripped back the record is, letting those gorgeous vocals and harmonies just float, pulling you in. It’s inviting you in. What’s in it? A clear, honest message that your strength is right there inside you, tied to your beginnings. There’s nothing hidden, nothing forced. It’s just pure, open emotion, and that’s a brave thing to put out there.
That line, “when all the love you need, is always there underneath, nobody can take away what's in my roots,” it’s more than just a lyric. It’s a feeling, a reminder that just resonates. It settles in your heart and just stays.
I think what people are really noticing about MEGA is this magnetic energy without a grand artistic statement she's just allowing those who gravitate towards her to just be. With that it's allowing gravity to do it's work - songs like 'Chariots' written and produced by Johnathan Hocking's hitting 50 million streams thats not luck that's an artist connecting, like really connecting with people. And then you look at her journey from opera houses to gospel choirs, to now performing at Meltdown next to The Streets, Jon Batiste. That doesn’t happen by accident. It’s all part of something bigger, something unfolding naturally.
Her Ugandan heritage, those choir days, it’s all stitched in, not as something put on, but as the very fabric of who she is. And the messages in her music? Self-worth, mental strength, embracing all parts of yourself they’re not just words. They’re the heart of it. In a world that often feels like it’s pulling us in a thousand directions, MEGA’s music just tells you to breathe, to find your centre, to remember what makes you you.
This isn’t just a new song or a new EP. It’s MEGA just standing tall, reminding us that sometimes, the most profound thing an artist can do is just offer up their truest self. And you know, right now, that’s exactly the kind of feeling we need to hold onto.
Here's 'Roots' in her own words:

"‘Roots’ is a reminder that no matter how far you drift, or how many times you lose sense of purpose, the one thing that you always have is the thing that makes you, you. Our roots are what make us who we are. Going back to the beginning has been a good way for me to reset and to remind myself of my core values. Returning to environments that remind me of who I am and that I am loved. My roots are my foundation. Our roots give us a sense of identity and for me, some security and safety! There is strength that can be found in your roots and that can look very different for different people. For for me it’s like when we misplace or lose something like an object of some sort - we often go back to the last place we remember seeing it. In a similar way, when I feel like I’ve drifted or feel lost, and remember to go back to the place that I feel most like me - I am reminded of who I am. When doubts and insecurities come (which they will), when we remember who we are and where we came from, it fuels our strength to stand firm and keep going."
